Ogarev Mordovia State University(OMSU) was founded in 1931. Today it is one of the leading universities of the Volga Region, headed by Professor Sergey Vdovin. In 2010 University was granted the status of National Research University.

The student body including all modes of study (pre-university, graduate, post graduate and further professional education) counts over 20000. 1655 teachers and lecturers work at the University, among them – 225 Professors, Doctors of Science and 1089 Associate Professors, Candidates of Science (PhD).

The University offers bachelor and master degrees in various academic fields. Academic disciplines are offered through 11 faculties and 8 academic institutes.

The University conducts research on broad range of subjects in 28 scientific fields. Mordovia State University has merged to operate 7 Research Institutes and constructed Centre for New Information Technologies, Internet Centre, Innovations Centre and the largest of its kind academic conglomeration within the Volga region – The Mordovia Republic Interdisciplinary Centre for Research and Education.

Internationally the university has links with universities in Europe, Asia and North America. Among the most internationalised areas are Finno-Ugric Philology, Sociology&Philosophy, Economics, Linguistics, Medicine, Mathematics, Biology and Law.
